      <image:title>Voice Therapy - Voice Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>The voice can express physical or emotional imbalance, distress or disease. It may be used in a way that over or under utilises its capacity. Children and adults may have difficulties with their voice because of problems they were born with or have acquired. This may be due to an infection or disease, trauma, neurological or endocrine disorder/disease or benign or malignant tumours. It may also be due to the way they use their voice or emotional difficulties and life stresses Therapy focuses on understanding the voice, what may be causing the difficulties, experimenting with life-style changes, emotional support and vocal physiological adjustments through an individualised programme to create balance and efficiency in how the vocal system functions. Nicola works with a wide range of people, including professional voice users, such as teachers, actors and singers, with children and their families, with older people, who are experiencing changes to the voice through ageing and with functional neurological voice conditions (FND). An examination of the voice box (larynx) by an ENT laryngology doctor is usually recommended prior to treatment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Voice Therapy - Habit Cough and Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO)</image:title>
<image:caption>Habit cough and ILO (also known as vocal cord dysfunction, or paradoxical vocal fold movement) are conditions that can be resolved with the behavioural approaches used by Speech and Language Therapists specialising in voice and airway conditions. Habit cough can result from oversensitivity in the larynx (voice box) creating a persistent, frequent, non-productive cough. Treatment includes understanding the cause of the problem, and physical and psychological ways to inhibit the cough. Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO) is when the vocal folds move together instead of moving apart when trying to breath in. This can often be mistaken for asthma and some people with asthma may also have ILO. Other terms used to describe this condition includes Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement and Vocal Cord Dysfunction. Treatment includes understanding how the larynx (voice box) works, how to breath in a more efficient pattern and psychological approaches to inhibit or minimise the troublesome breathing pattern.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Being seen and heard means stepping into a place of vulnerability and taking a risk. Voice coaching and Speech Therapy provide support with voice and communication skills to speak from a place of authentic and confident self-expression. Some people may feel anxious and nervous around public speaking. A wide range of psychological approaches can help to find a way to express oneself with greater calm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stammering Therapy - Stammering</image:title>
<image:caption>Stammering, or stuttering affects the smooth coordination of speech. Stammering can be overt - the physical struggle to speak, or covert - the emotional struggle and avoidance of speaking and situations. How someone stammers and the treatment approach required, will be unique for each person.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stammering Therapy - About Stammering</image:title>
<image:caption>Research suggests that individuals have a genetic predisposition to stammering. Stammering usually starts when a child is learning to talk, though it can start later in life. The interplay of neurological ‘wiring’, the environment, linguistic demands and an individual’s psychological make up, are all factors implicated in stammering, and the way it can vary throughout life and in different situations. Stammering often creates anxiety and avoidance of speaking and situations. Approximately one percent of the world’s population stammers. More boys than girls continue to experience stammering into adulthood.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stammering Therapy - What helps</image:title>
<image:caption>Speech management approaches address the physical struggle of speaking. Emotional support and psychological therapies help to manage uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, assisting people to feel more at ease and confident. It helps to think of stammering as something someone does, rather than who someone is. This can be as simple as saying “I stammer” or a “person who stammers” rather than “I’m a stammerer”. This challenges the ‘single story’ of someone’s reality and allows for a different relationship with the stammer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stammering Therapy - Speech fluency approaches</image:title>
<image:caption>“Stammer more fluently” are Charles Van Riper and Joseph Sheehan’s approaches, widely used in the UK. The four stages of therapy include: identifying what people do and feel when they stammer; feeling less sensitive about stammering; modifying speech patterns before, during or after the moment of stammering; and finally tools for maintaining fluency and going for what matters in life. “Speaking more fluently” focuses on changing the speech pattern. This includes the Valsalva Technique (Brian Perry) and Vocal Fold Management (Catherine Montgomery). Technology apps and communication aids change the auditory processing of speech and can be integrated into therapy. Techniques are best learnt through short and frequent practice, in varying situations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Communication involves verbal and non-verbal communication and paralanguage (meaning expressed via pitch, loudness, vocal tone, vocal quality and speech rate). Therapy is available for feminising the voice and masculinising the voice, as well as for those seeking to neutralise the voice. <image:title>Gender Affirming Voice Therapy - Vocal Space</image:title>
<image:caption>Vocal work involves being playful with the voice, building on what is working well and learning new vocal patterns that involve taking a risk and stepping into a place of vulnerability. The voice needs to be produced with a free and energised body and vocal mechanism, to enable greater flexibility. Therapy sessions build on each other, to develop new vocal patterns and habits. With time and practice, these become more automatic and generalise to all situations. Voice therapy includes exploring breathing patterns, vocal fold (cord) vibratory patterns, release of constriction in the larynx and making full use of the vocal tract and articulatory system to move the voice to where it wants to go. Vocal feminisation involves developing a lighter, brighter and higher pitch voice. Resonance is more forward focused and more movement is created through intonation patterns. Vocal masculinisation and neutralising therapy focuses on expanding out resonance and spaces in the vocal tract and respiratory system and the use of vocal loudness and intonation patterns. If taking testosterone, Nicola can provide support as the larynx (voice box) is transformed through the physiological effect of the hormones.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gender Affirming Voice Therapy - Emotional Space</image:title>
<image:caption>Vocal and communication change can be emotionally challenging, as it involves journeying with the voice and communication to a less known and less familiar place. This can create a range of emotions such as fear and anxiety at times. Psychological approaches during therapy can support communication and vocal change. <image:title>Paediatric Voice - Voice Therapy for Children</image:title>
<image:caption>Voice Therapy with children requires a special approach. Voice therapy should be playful and engaging, as well as developmentally appropriate for the child, to enable them to participate well in therapy. Some children may have a voice problem such as vocal fold nodules, that usually recovers well with voice therapy. Other children may have a more long-lasting voice problem that requires support around maximising the child’s vocal potential and ways to manage the vocal difference on their lives. Nicola uses games, art, puppets, movement and the imagination of the child, to tailor the sessions to suit their temperament and pace of learning. She invites the families to join in with the journey of change.</image:caption>
